According to the christmas editon of the radio times Russel T davies speakes out about the future of the show:

Russell T Davies has spoken to the Christmas issue of Radio Times about this year's festive special, The Next Doctor, and what the future holds for the Time Lord.

Regarding the 2009 specials, the show's executive producer said: "We're already rebooting the computers and fuelling the engines, ready to hit the road. The first adventure, to be show in only a few months' time, promises to be the Time Lord's wildest, maddest yet. He won't just be travelling without a companion - he'll be without his TARDIS, too. After that, we'll be heading towards the monumentous day when the key to that blue box is passed on, and the 11th Doctor storms into your lives. Just think of the adventures to come. Though you'll still have David at the helm of the TARDIS this time next year. But oh, what a Christmas that's going to be. Let's just say that dark forces are gathering already. The Gate is waiting, and life will never be the same..."Once again, Russell has done what he does best, and teased us about what's in store, leaving us with several unanswered questions regarding the future of the show, and the ultimate fate of the Tenth Doctor. Just what is the Gate? What 'dark forces' will lead to the Doctor's regeneration? Who is the Eleventh Doctor?!
