Set Reports for the week

Filming Begins on the Specials

For the first time since the completion of material for "The Next Doctor" in April 2008, BBC Wales have resumed the production of Doctor Who. Work began yesterday, on Monday the 19th of January, with director James Strong helming material for the forthcoming special Planet of the Dead at Museum Avenue and Park Place in Cardiff.

As has become the custom, the shooting of Doctor Who has attracted the attention of fans, several of whom have been down to the location to observe activity and take photographs, one of which is reproduced at the right. The Doctor Who News Page will avoid giving any spoilers for episodes while they are in production, but those interested in finding out more about the production in Cardiff view the photos in upcoming posts.

Filing 2009 in Dubai

Following on from an earlier blog report from The Guardian, the Dubai-based newspaper 7DAYS has reported that filming for one of the forthcoming Doctor Who specials will take place in Dubai. There has been no official word from BBC sources; the 7DAYS article quotes an unnamed "BBC insider" confirming that the series will be filming in Dubai "later this year". The same article also states, "At least one other episode will be shot in the US, it was disclosed."

The newspaper also created a few images of Doctor Who aliens and villains in Dubai scenes; one of these is at right. The rest can be seen in the "e-paper" available on the 7DAYS website after (free) registration. 7DAYS website

The Bride of Davros (spoof)

Paris Hilton has signed up for a leading role in one of the upcoming Doctor Who specials in 2009 entitled 'The Bride Of Davros'.

An insider on the hit show stated: "Paris is a major casting coup for the show and really raises the bar. We've been waiting to find the right role for her for some time, and she was our first choice to portray the shady temptress who will lure Dalek creator Davros down the aisle.

"The BBC really hope to boost the profile of Doctor Who in the United States and when we learnt that Paris is as fond of Daleks as she is of Chihuahuas then we knew we were on to a winner."

Hilton has previously appeared in the films Zoolander and The House Of Wax, but this will make her first dramatic role in TV.

Filming is scheduled to begin in March and the 60-minute special, in which David Tennant will play the Time Lord, is likely to be shown at Christmas.

Breaking news... we interrupt this news bulletin to report that the above story is absolute fabricated codswallop of the highest order

Michelle Ryan to be 1th Doctors companion

Former Eastender Michelle Ryan is being lined as Doctor Who's new assistant.

She has been picked by show bosses to replace Freema Agyeman in the new series next year.

Michelle, 24, will star with previously little-known actor Matt Smith, 26, who was announced as the 11th and youngest Time Lord earlier this month.

A source on the show said: "Michelle's been in secret talks with BBC bosses.
They are likely to announce her as Doctor Who's new assistant very soon. She is perfect for the role. She is goodlooking and the right age to star alongside Matt. Everyone agrees they look great together and reckon fans will think they're the perfect team too."

Michelle - who recently played sorceress Nimueh in hit BBC series Merlin - auditioned to play the Doctor's helper in 2005, hoping to take over from Billie Piper. She was turned down in favour of Freema, 29, and a year later got a big break and went to the US to star in The Bionic Woman. But the remake of a 70s TV favourite lasted just eight episodes and Michelle returned to Britain.

The source added: "The BBC launched Michelle's acting career as Zoe Slater in EastEnders and she will be thrilled to be back with them in such a legendary role.

"It's an incredible opportunity for her and even though she's had a lot of success already she is still young and at the start of her career."

Lily Allen, 23, Kelly Brook, 29, and 23-year-old Carey Mulligan - who played Sally Sparrow in a previous Doctor Who episode - have all recently been linked to the coveted assistant's role.

Tate to appear on the Sunday Night Project

Catherine Tate can be seen spoofing Doctor Who this weekend on entertainment show The Sunday Night Project.

She is the guest host on the Channel 4 programme on January 18, and as well as delivering a monologue she puts on a wig, sideburns, suit and overcoat to assume the guise of the Tenth Doctor. The show's format also sees guest hosts facing questions from the studio audience.

In addition, regular co-host Justin Lee Collins portrays a bride, echoing Tate's first appearance as Donna Noble in Doctor Who.

The programme will air at 10pm.

David Tennant, Billie Piper and John Barrowman all guest-hosted during the show's Friday Night Project incarnation.

Catherine Tate will be the celebrity guest host on this Sunday's episode of Channel 4's The Sunday Night Project.
Tate will be co-hosting the programme with regulars Justin Lee Collins and Alan Carr. She's following in the footsteps of David Tennant and Billie Piper, who have both previously appeared on the show.

Tune into The Sunday Night Project on Sunday 18th January at 10pm on Channel 4!

Specials to be filmed in Dubai (possibility)

The website of The Guardian newspaper has published an article by Gareth McLean, attacking the alleged decision of the BBC to carry out location shooting for one of the forthcoming Doctor Who specials in the state of Dubai.

Although the shooting in the United Arab Emirates has not yet been officially confirmed by the BBC, McLean quotes the Corporation as having told him that "There are no restrictions governing the filming of BBC drama in Dubai." McLean attacks the possibility of the programme being filmed there, on the basis of the country's human rights record.

Says McLean: "Though Dubai might be doing an effective job of presenting itself as a glitzy tourist destination, a place associated with mind-boggling decadence and the embodiment in glass and steel of the determination of the human spirit, the fact is, you may run out of fingers counting the ways in which filming even some of Doctor Who there is wrong."

The Guardian's Gareth McLean has slammed the BBC's proposed decision to film part of the next Doctor Who episode in Dubai.
Rumours of filming abroad first surfaced last year, and were later confirmed by Russell T Davies. However, it's still not known where the filming will be taking place, with heavy rumours suggesting the production team will be heading off too Dubai.

But McLean has today attacked the move, based on the country's human rights record. You can read his full article here.

Filming for the next episode of Doctor Who, 4.15: Planet of the Dead, begins on Monday 19th January 2009.

Piper Talks about Smithh

Talking to TVGuide.com, Billie Piper has added her insight on new Doctor Matt Smith, speaking as his former co-star.

The two appeared together in The Ruby in the Smoke, The Shadow in the North and Secret Diary of a Call Girl.

Piper labels herself a "big fan" of Smith. "I love him. He's a stirring actor, and he has the right energy," she says. "That's what the Doctor is about, essentially - having that energy that you just can't understand."

Addressing the concern that Smith, at 26, is too young to effectively play the good Doctor, Piper notes, "The fans get so concerned about these things, and they should just relax. It's going to be fine. They're in good hands."

Piper also comments on the rumours that a woman - possibly even herself - was being considered for the role of the new Doctor. "David [Tennant] has joked about me doing it, but... I don't think the Doctor should be a woman," she says. "It's like going, 'Let's make James Bond a woman.' It's a man's role."
Billie Piper has told TVGuide.com that she's a huge fan of new Doctor Matt Smith.
"I love him," she told the website. "He's a stirring actor, and he has the right energy. That's what the Doctor's is about, essentially - having that energy that you just can't understand."

Like the majority of fans, Piper, who has previously starred alongside Smith in The Ruby in the Smoke, The Shadow in the North and Secret Diary of a Call Girl, isn't worried by Smith's young age. At 26 years old, he'll be the youngest actor to portray the Time Lord in the show's history.

"The fans get so concerned about these things," Piper said. "And they should just relax. It's going to be fine. They're in good hands."

The actress has also responded to the rumours that she herself was in line to be cast as the Eleventh Doctor.

"David Tennant has joked about me doing it, but I don't think the Doctor should be a woman," she said. "It's like going, 'Let's make James Bond a woman.' It's a man's role."

So, will Piper be returning to the show to work with Smith in the fifth series of Doctor Who, which will hit our screens Spring 2010?

"I don't know," she hedges. "It's hard. Sometimes you just want to leave something behind, and then you see an episode and are like, 'God I really want to do it!' You change your mind all the time."

Barrowman To Write a TW Comic
When the March issue of Torchwood Magazine hits the newsstands, readers will find a special treat inside: an original Torchwood comic strip written by John Barrowman

The actor, who plays Captain Jack Harkness in the Doctor Who spinoff, has penned "Captain Jack and the Selkie" with his sister Carole E. Barrowman and editor Martin Eden.

Eden told the magazine: "I'm so excited to be working on this story. John and Carole are an absolute pleasure to work with. Believe me, the readers are in for a treat!"

Carole revealed that the project has been on her and John's agenda for some time, saying: "When John and I were working on [John's autobiography] Anything Goes, we spent a lot of time together on the Torchwood set.

"In between our storytelling and moments of inspired silliness, we decided we'd like to work on a project together that involved Captain Jack."
The multi-talented John Barrowman will showcase his artistic skills when he pens a comic for the official Torchwood magazine.
The actor, singer, presenter, author, you-name-it-he's-done-it, will write Captain Jack and the Selkie with help from his sister, Carole E. Barrowman, and editor Martin Eden.

"I'm so excited to be working on this story," Eden said. "John and Carole are an absolute pleasure to work with. Believe me, the readers are in for a treat!"

Carole, who also helped John write his autobiography, added: "When John and I were working on Anything Goes, we spent a lot of time together on the Torchwood set."

She added: "In between our storytelling and moments of inspired silliness, we decided we'd like to work on a project together that involved Captain Jack."

Captain Jack and the Selkie will be featured in the March issue of Torchwood: The Official Magazine.

Torchwood To be Broadcast during Summer 09

Michael Jensen of AfterElton.com has revealed tentative plans for the broadcast of the five-part Torchwood miniseries, Torchwood: Children of Earth. Please bear in mind that these comments represent early plans, which may change.

If the report is accurate, it may disappoint some British Torchwood fans, who had been hoping that the miniseries would air in the spring. But the report has good news for American Torchwood fans, who may not have to wait as long as usual to see the latest episodes:
BBC America president Garth Ancier is here in Los Angeles for the Television Critics Association January tour and after he presented panels for BBC America's latest offerings, I had the chance to ask him if he had an air date for Torchwood: Children of Earth on BBCA. He didn't yet have a firm air date as BBC America is waiting for the BBC to finalize their date, but he was fairly certain that it was going to be the first part of this summer, possibly late June or early July.

He also said that not only would BBC America air the five episodes on consecutive nights as they are doing across the pond, but that they would also air in the U.S. the same day as they did in the U.K. meaning American audiences will have almost no lag time in seeing the series. (The U.K. is five hours ahead of the east coast of the U.S meaning the delay should be about that give or take). Ancier said the series might also air in High Definition, a first for BBCA.
The anticipiated third series of Torchwood, Children of Earth, will hit our screens this Summer, according to AfterElton.com.
Michael Jensen claims that, whilst attending the Television Critics Association in LA, he managed to ask the BBC America president Garth Ancier when the miniseries would be transmitted on BBCA.

Ancier told him that although there's no confirmed airdate yet, it's likely that the series will air in America during the Summer - either late June or early July.

However, he added that the episodes will transmit in America on the same day as they do in the UK, meaning that the airdate for British fans will be the same (give or take a few hours).

This news will come as a disappointment for UK fans, who were hoping for a Spring airdate. However, it means that American fans will also get to enjoy the series without having to wait months behind.

Click here to read Jensen's full article, and please bear in mind that these details aren't accurate or confirmed, so there's a chance they might still change after all.

RTD Talks About the First Special
Executive Producer and Head Writer Russell T. Davies reveals that the forthcoming Doctor Who special Planet Of The Dead will serve as an "antidote" to recent adventures.

The departing showrunner told Doctor Who Magazine: "After the events of Journey's End and The Next Doctor I think it's time to get away from the past and have an adventure with lots of new elements. And lots of fun too!

"The next Special should be a nice antidote to Christmas, with a bit of sunshine if we're lucky. And with not one but two alien races that you've never seen before."
The next episode of Doctor Who, Planet of the Dead, will be an "antidote" to past adventures, according to Russell T Davies.

DW DVD Files

This week sees the launch in the UK of a Doctor Who DVD and magazine series, the Doctor Who DVD Files.

Published by GE Fabbri, which also produces Doctor Who Battles in Time, it will be available fortnightly. Every issue comes with a DVD featuring two full-length episodes and a unique pull-apart magazine to form a reference work about the show.

The first issue features Christopher Eccleston's Ninth Doctor as he meets Rose Tyler in the opening episode of the new series, "Rose", then takes her to "The End of the World". Subsequent issues follow the series through in broadcast order as the Doctor and his companions travel the universe, facing monsters such as the Daleks, Slitheen and Cybermen, and villains such as the Editor and Cassandra.

Every DVD comes with a 24-page magazine containing insider information and specially-commissioned artwork. "Because of the way it builds up you'll soon have hundreds of pages of invaluable information," says GE project manager Ben Robinson.

The magazine will feature never-seen-before photographs, exclusive behind-the-scenes interviews, episode guides, profiles of monsters, heroes and villains, new artwork showing classic moments from the show's history and specially created diagrams and cutaways produced by members of the Doctor Who art department.

The first edition is out on January 14.
The brand new magazine, Doctor Who DVD Files, has landed, with issue one out now in newsagents across the United Kingdom!
Each issue of the magazine, which is released every fortnight, comes with a DVD featuring two complete episodes of the new series of Doctor Who (issue 1 kicks off with Rose & The End of the World, issue 2 with The Unquiet Dead & Aliens of London, issue 3 with World War Three & Dalek, etc...), as well as a guide to the episodes, the Doctor's companions, monsters and more!

The collection will consist of 28 issues, the last of which will include Journey's End and The Next Doctor, meaning that if you were to buy every issue, you'd eventually have every single episode from Series 1-4. It's likely that it'll carry on after that once new episodes of Doctor Who are available.

Issue 1 is out now, priced £1.99, and the DVD with it includes Rose and The End of the World. Every issue from now will be released at the RPP of £6.99.

The advert will be posted soon

Barrowman Talking about Series 3 of Torchwood

What can you tell us about the new series of Torchwood?
"It's five episodes stripped from Monday to Friday and we're moving to BBC One. The reason we're doing only five episodes is because we need to make an impact on One. If we were to do an entire series, the show might kinda float around and not really be recognised."

Any teasers on what might happen in the new episodes?
"Well, you'll find out more about Jack's dark past and a lot about Gwen too. There's going to be some deaths, some new faces, some surprises and an event that will almost destroy the world. There's also going to be a shocking event instigated by Jack that people will be totally floored by."

Are you missing Naoko Mori and Burn Gorman?
"Of course I miss them. Naoko and Burn were part of our family and the characters of Toshiko and Owen were so important to the show. The first couple of days we started filming in the hub again, it felt a bit empty so we put pictures of them up on our desks. Naoko and Burn will always be part of Torchwood because they were there at the beginning and helped to make the show what it is today."

Are they mentioned much in the new episodes?
"Oh yeah, we mention them, and Toshiko even got a mention in the last episode of Doctor Who. Plus there are plans to do more some Torchwood radio programmes because the first one was so popular - it even beat all the TV programmes on iPlayer. Who knows what they're going to be written about, but I would love to see old characters brought back because we can do different things on radio and jump around a bit more."

Is it fear of attack from beyond the city walls that drives him or the threat closer to home? Or does the Sheriff have something to hide?

After a terrifying encounter with a deadly Krillitane, the Doctor realises the city has good reason to be scared.

The Next Doctor was watched by 13.1 million viewers on Christmas Day, according to official figures issued by BARB. The final figure is much larger than the initial overnight ratings, and includes those who recorded the programme and watched it within one week. The figure puts Doctor Who as the number two programme of the week, the third episode running to make the top two.

The high rating makes Doctor Who the fifth most watched programme of 2008, beating every episode of EastEnders and Coronation Street shown during the year. It was the highest rated drama of 2008. The top programme of the year was Wallace and Grommit: A Matter of Loaf and Death, co-written by K9 co-creator Bob Baker, with 16.15 million watching. The only other programmes to beat Doctor Who last year were The X Factor and the final of Britain's Got Talent.

The Next Doctor has the ninth highest rating in the series' 45 year history, a remarkable achievement seeing that for much of its life Doctor Who only faced opposition from ITV and BBC2.

Noel Nominated for Bafta

Noel Clarke, the actor, writer and director who played the character of Mickey Smith in Doctor Who off-and-on from 2005 until last year, has been nominated for the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) Rising Star Award. Clarke, who also wrote an episode for the first series of spin-off programme Torchwood in 2006, has been recognised in the category for his work on the films Kidulthood and Adulthood, both of which he wrote and the latter of which he also directed.

BBC News reports that Clarke is up against Toby Keppell, Rebecca Hall, Michael Fassbender and Michael Cera for the prize. The winner, decided by an online and text message public vote, will be announced at the BAFTA Film Awards ceremony in London on February the 8th. Further details can be found on the BAFTA website
